HEALTH SECTION IN GOA

Introduction

Goa has one of the most extensive health infrastructure in India directorate of health services has an important role to perform in health delivery by providing preventive promotive,curative and rehabilitative health services to people through primary health approach. The health care infrastructure has been developed as a three-tier system namely,
primary,secondary and tertiary care.

Primary care is the first level of care that patients receive and is focused on Patients wellness and the prevention of severe health conditions primary care provides are typically patients first point of contact when they have medical concerns or need.Secondary care is more specialized and focuses on helping patients who are struggling with more severe or complex health conditions requiring the support of a specialist secondary care is typically delivered in inpatient settings and is best defined as care for patients who require intensive specialist care but whose vital signs are stable.Tertiary care is another form of specialized care that is a level above secondary care in that it involves supporting patients who are encountering life threatening illness and whose vitals are not stabilized . Tertiary care is delivered in settings such as the intensive care unit (ICU) emergency room , trauma,organ transparent and critical care units.

Features of Health section in Goa

  1. The three district hospitals viz. Hospicio hospital, Margao in South Goa district, sub district hospital, Ponda and Asilo hospital, Mapusa in North Goa district, and three other specialised/general hospitals viz. Leprosy hospital Macazana; T.B. hospital, Margao, Cottage hospital, Chicalim, under the directorate also serve as referral hospital
  2. There are in all 1374 beds in the hospital under the directorate of which 469 beds are attached to 2 CHCs/PHCs. 
  3. There are 18 dental clinics and other special clinics for implementaion of various programmes such as family welfare, T.B., NCD, STD, Malaria, laprosy, control of blindness, etc. 
  4. Homeopathic dispensaries (one attached to UHS, Panjim and other attached to CHS, Pernem) and five Ayurveda dispensaries (one each attached to district hospital Mapusa and Margao, PHC Bicholim, CHC Canacona, CHC Curchorem, PHC Balli and PHC Quepem,).
  5. There are four urban health centres in tje four major towns ciz. Panjim, Margao, Vasco and Mapusa and one medical dispensary at Sada Vasco and a STD clinic at Baina, Vasco. 
Conclusion

Even though Goa has developed the 3 tier level healthcare infrastructure i.e. Primary, Secondary and Tertiary, a larger section of the society living in rural areas have been unable to gain access to the same. Primary healthcare facilities should be made easily accessible at a lower cost for all the people. The delivery mechanism of Goa healthCare system is well designed and the directorate of health services play an important role in the administration and provision of healthcare services.
